Pre War / Re: Lucas horn diagram BSA-B18

just a note that the horn is now working. it turned out to be a missing C-clip. A diagram would have shown it, in the end it took a fair bit of head scratching to nail it.
Cheers

Wow, great looking machine, but sorry I can't help you there. I left this one as is - see pic. it's a 1936 B18. Been working on it on and off for 6 years, nearly there now.

Pre War / Lucas horn diagram BSA-B18

Hello, would anyone know of a schematic diagram for the Lucas 1140 horn?
I stripped mine some time ago to clean it, it did work (should've left it alone!). Now assembled the magnet functions but the plate that it should pull is rock solid. I think it should flex a bit but I can't work out how.
Comments appreciated.
Many thanks
Dave

Singles / Re: B33 carburettor settings
« on: 26 February, 2020, 12:18:47 »
Hi again, I spoke to Burlen / Amal technical and very helpful they were too. It turns out that the choke diameter should match the inlet duct diameter ideally. The inlet on my bike is 1 1/8" dia. (pre 1954 size) and it should be a pre-monobloc carb although a 1 1/8" monobloc can be jetted to suit.
My bike was running rich at plodding speeds, this will probably be why.

Regards.

I shall follow your thread with interest, as I've just found that my B33 has a 1" monobloc carb (should be 1 1/6"). All other parts to spec.
As Paulm suggests it's probably a good idea to phone AMAL. I shall try this first and let you know what they say.

Singles / Re: compressing engine cush drive nut on B33?
« on: 27 January, 2020, 10:41:33 »
Thanks for your comments guys. I will have to investigate further re correct components, i.e. spring too long or nut to short.
Otherwise it will be a matter of making a good tool to compress with. My last effort was all a bit Heath Robinson and risked damaging the threads.
Regards
Dave
p.s. It is now running fine, so all being well we will be off on the Dragon Rally in two weeks.

Note re chain case: a new gasket was made using a cork/rubber material. Quite thick this, about 4mm. Now refitted the chain case is holding oil and seems good. Had a couple of short runs out and still oil tight.
Phew.
p.s. actually managed to start first kick yesterday!

Cheers Mick, you must have experienced similar to me and had to be innovative and come up with a solution to the problem.
My situation was made even more difficult, having fitted a new clutch, when it became necessary to align the chain/sprockets by packing out the front sprocket.

Hi Dave, thanks for that; mmmm! sounds like something is amiss here then. I had to arrange a lever (quite a long one) to press the nut in while my dear wife turned the engine over to spin the crank. It took a few goes to get the thread to catch squarely.
Something I'll have to look into.
Thanks again and kind regards.

Re 1956 B33 engine
Please can you advise how to compress the spring enough to allow the threads of the nut to engage on the shaft? Mine has about 10mm to go.
Many thanks.

Tapped out the stripped threads to suit 5mm metric. I'll see how this goes.

Hi Bess, I managed to source some of these inserts locally yesterday with the insert tool @ £26; but didn't commit to buy just yet. A friend suggested tapping the 3/16" stripped hole out to 5mm. I did this and it seems to work, it just adds the complication of mixing threads. As I was hoping to do the repair with case fitted, it will have to wait until I can solder on new nuts.
Regards and many thanks.

Thanks Chaz, I will ponder on these options for a while before coming up with a final decision. It may be a week or two, I'll keep you posted.
Kind regards.

There's a thing called a Rivnut, does anyone have experience of these?
Cheers

Thanks Chaz, it is the perimeter screw on the steel chain case. So a sheet metal rivet may well be the answer. I'll look them up, a 4 or 5mm may do it.
Regards.
