I haven't seen a picture of a linear spring - the brake light switch has a linear spring; I don't know if there would be enough room for another spring. I wonder if the later spring would retro fit to the early models?

Is there a brake pedal return spring on the pivot of the rear brake pedal?
My bike hasn't got one and some drawings don't show one. I believe the C15 has a spring. I wondered if the B40 one (if it needs one) is the same?

I know this has been discussed before but there doesn't seem to be any "rules" about doing this.

The front brake lever is most effective at 90 degrees to the cable when operated. Sometimes it is difficult to compensate for wear by moving the operating lever to another position as the brake cam end is square shaped. Also the hub can also wear a little inside.
Oversize linings can be fitted but is it ok to fit shims over the ends of the shoes ( made out of tin cans ) to take up a bit of the space between the brake shoe and drum?

Thanks for the quick answers.

It appears that I've got to completely strip the bike to get the frame to have the swinging arm looked at and the pin pressed out if possible.

One other quick question; does the pivot tube at the top of the rear part of the frame just push out with a bit of persuasion?

New to this forum.
Recently bought a B40 ( 1961) which needed tidying. Came with a 12 month MOT so was usable.
However, I started dismantling with a view to repainting etc and everytime I remove something, a new problem arises.
At present the bike is just a frame with the engine in. I would appreciate a bit of advice on:

1. The swinging arm is solid - I cannot move it in the frame! I assume the pivot axle is seized. Any advice?
2. The battery box has virtually rotted away so will need rebuilding. Has anyone got a photo of what it should look like so I can get an idea of what to make?
3. How heavy is the engine  ? is it easy to lift out without any help?
4. Where is the best place for parts ?
