Twins / Headset bearing adjustment.
« on: 16 February, 2018, 17:15:40 »
I started with a bare frame, new abutment rings, new bearings fitted and new stanchions. I have fitted the fork legs and front wheel. The problem I have is the final adjustment on the new setup. It is all too heavy to feel the adjustment. Worried about over-tightening.  Any tips please. 1971 A65.

« on: 11 February, 2018, 15:35:04 »

Twins / Which Boyer for 1971 A65 OIF
« on: 10 February, 2018, 12:00:01 »
Decided on a Boyer Conversion but which one. I want to retain my 12 volt coils. There are several for BSA twins on the market from 94 to 134. I emailed a well known dealer asking this question, their young lady just sent me the fitting instructions.  :-\. I just want a bolt on with no need to buy other bits. The Mark 4 00052 seems to fit the bill. Thanks.

The Star and Garter / Dunstall Exhausts
« on: 06 February, 2018, 17:24:53 »
I am trying to decide which exhausts to put on my late A65. I like the look of the Dunstalls and they have-had a good name. I don't want too LOUD, any views welcome; thanks.

Twins / New Chrome Rear Mudguard Fitting. A65 OIF
« on: 31 January, 2018, 16:03:55 »
Decided to fit my brand new rear chrome mudguard today. Side by side on the garage floor they looked identical'ish. First job was to drill out the front welds and relocate and shorten the front bracket that fits to the rear of the down tube. The four number plate bracket holes were a good 15mm out. The two grab rail holes were 15mm out. One other top mounting was only 10 mm out.
The Lucas rear light bracket has three holes, these were all out by 15 mm. I drilled out all the offending holes and was very pleased that none of the old holes were visible when it was all put together. The quality of the mudguard was otherwise very good so I won't bother naming the shop. Thoroughly enjoyed the meaning of fettling today, looks really nice. I wish I could find a chrome front one, no one is producing these at the moment, only stainless  :'(

Twins / A65 Sump guard OIF
« on: 29 January, 2018, 17:59:53 »
Apart from keeping the bottom of the engine clean, are these sump guards of real value. I have never seen one fitted to a bike ( Yet ).

Twins / Lucas 169SA Handlebar Light Switches 1971-2 another question.
« on: 26 January, 2018, 15:21:12 »
Got most of the wires sorted on this dip switch. Horn works, flasher button ok. On a resistance test I cannot get anything on the BLUE wire which goes up to another switch ( 11 ) according to a wiring diagram in the Haynes Manual. I am testing from the WHITE inside the switch to all contacts. It would seem that the white is common live. Not my best subject ? Thanks. If anyone has a decent colour or a better diagram, please post it.

Twins / Zener Diode
« on: 25 January, 2018, 16:04:12 »
Can someone tell me what the Zener  Diode actually does. I assume it must be bolted to a good earth, this came with my basket case so please don't mock. This is what the forums are for. Can it be tested with my Avo meter.
Many thanks.

Twins / Bike Height ?
« on: 23 January, 2018, 16:15:55 »
My 1971 A65 OIF has new fork stanchions, the correct length. new rims and Dunlops 18 rear 19 Front. Standard centre stand. What I can't work out why the front wheel is off the ground by 2"  when on the stand. The engine is not fitted, but I can't see why it would make a difference. I have looked at a few on Google and about 80% sit with both tyres on the ground ?

Twins / 1971 OIF Thread.
« on: 19 January, 2018, 16:54:40 »
Every thread on my A65 is shown as Uni-thread. However the oil feed pipe is held on with a 5/16" Whitworth bolt according to my parts list..21-1973. Can anyone confirm please.

The Star and Garter / New ebay scam.
« on: 18 January, 2018, 15:58:31 »
This guy is now stealing genuine ID's. These have a postal address down the page. It appears to be a normal auction with a few bids. There is no email address in description this time so it all looks good so far. Then he will get a message asking for a Buy it Now price, then the scam begins. The greedy buyer accepts the price and sends the demanded deposit to hold it, good bye money !! The Scammer nearly always has campers, caravans and cars in his other adverts. He also leaves a trade mark that I always spot ( most days of the week ). I will not reveal his trade mark on here. Be careful, no money till you have laid hands on goods.

Twins / A65 OIF Wiring
« on: 14 January, 2018, 17:49:25 »
Work is progressing onto the electrics. I fitted the Lucas switches on the handlebars and the looms on these are so long they would almost reach the oil filler cap. Has anyone got a decent photo of one these with the tank off showing the wiring locations. Please bare in mind I bought this bike in bits, so I never took this apart. I read somewhere that the main loom connects behind the fork tube. I have a brand new Lucas main loom which matches all the colour codes ( Thank Christ )  ;D

The Star and Garter / Painting Barrels black
« on: 13 January, 2018, 16:29:26 »
Been a long time since I painted a set of BSA barrels. Is there anything new out there with a nice sheen that wont come off too soon. I have had the barrels in the parts washer bath for a few days in anticipation.

Twins / OIF clean out.
« on: 12 January, 2018, 17:48:06 »
I want to wash out my OIF Thunderbolt oil tank section of the frame during my restoration. I was going to pour a gallon of paraffin into tank and let it soak for a few days before dropping the sump off and flushing with hot soapy water. Any better ideas would be appreciated.
