Providing the shims are securely held in place there's no reason why not - just make sure that the shim is the same thickness either side of the cam so both shoes are adjusted by the same amount. My Matchless/AJS bikes are fitted with the means to install factory shims to account for wear. The shoe end bears on a mushroom shaped pad pinned into the end of the shoe and the shims are just washers that go underneath it so can't fall out.

Why the need to screw the backside of each old bike you buy, Mick? Isnt this the one that youve just had the crank rebuilt for and vibrates horrendously? I suppose at maximum revs itll soon be run-in. Hopefully youll not be using the same roads that I or any of my family (or anyone else fr that matter) use whilst youre at it :-\ Perhaps a Jap 600 and the odd track day may get these urges out of your system  ;)

Some years ago I ran a Suzuki Burgman 200  (Im ok now though  :-\ ) and always used the same MOT tester. One year he spotted that the frame number didnt match what the DVLA had recorded. It was obviously a typo/misreading of the frame number - I cant recall what it was now, but he was able to update it on the MOT system and a week or so later I was sent a replacement V5 with the correct number.
Id not checked it as I knew the previous owner and hed bought the bike new - and the number was stamped in such a difficult place to get at.
In reality, Im with Mike on this one though. Leave the dogs to sleep  ;)

Why not ring the local planning office - they're the experts? He/she will be able to give you the details of what's allowed under current regulations and will, if no planning is needed, send you that in writing at no charge.

I was on Ebay's chat thing last night reporting a batch - in particular my GF which was listed yet again - down to 3000 this time  :o It was obviously a hacked users account because they had a few genuine, totally non-motor related items listed in addition to the 50 or so assorted classic cars and bikes.
Whilst ebay took down the listings straight away, I got the impression that it was not of any great concern to them. They certainly wouldn't confirm that they were making any attempt to trace the individual/s, nor to block any listing with an email address in the text. I found that surprising as when I sent a message to the buyer of an outboard engine that I listed, which was sold prior to that message being sent,  and included my phone number to arrange collection they threatened to block my account for trying to sell outside ebay  >:( They obviously have filters that can recognise telephone numbers etc so it should be a simple matter for their filters to pick up unusual email addresses and phrases like 'selling on behalf of a friend' which appears in them.

A pal of mine sent me a screen shot earlier - of my 1952 Golden Flash listed on ebay for 3500  ??? The pics must've been saved from a previous sale as I don't recognise the background and the bike looks more than a little different now. The listing had already disappeared by the time I knew about it. Wish I could've bought it at that price  ;)

The Star and Garter / Any Fertan or Tapox users out there?

I've been cleaning the tank of my AJS M31DL of its surfeit of decaying Petseal over the last few weeks - there was a 1/2 inch thick slab of the damn stuff in the bottom of the tank  :evil: which took nearly 3 weeks of attack by Sealeater to make it let go its hold from around the tank front mounting.
Previously I have used Tank Care products - good at stripping out Petseal and clearing any rust etc, but very temperature dependent when it comes to applying the final coating. After doing the Matchless G80 tank about 3 years ago I didn't bother using the 2nd kit I bought - it's still on the shelf.
I've used POR15 on several other tanks which has been very effective and easy to apply. I use a combination of caustic soda then phosphoric acid to clean and de-rust the tanks prior to the final coating and have had excellent results.
For this tank I thought I'd give Tapox a go as it gets good reviews and I was able to pick up enough to do two 4 gallon tanks for about the same price as one tin of POR15.
The instructions recommended the use of Fertan to treat any rust so I thought 'In for a penny etc' and got some. All went well until it came to rinsing the tank out after 24hrs. Rather than having a nice treated surface I found that the tank was left coated in a fairly dense, and poorly adhering black deposit of excess Fertan. The coating dislodges very easily with a gentle prod but won't rinse off. As a result I really don't feel inclined to put Tapox on top of it as it seems destined to fail.
Ive tried the helpline and the chap suggested filling the tank with hot water and letting it stand for about 5 hours - next to no effect  :(
Has anyone else had the same issue and found a way of removing the fertan? I'm still waiting for a reply from the importers.

I used Draganfly as the supplier for pistons for both my B31 and Ariel 350. The bore for the B31 I had done at a local engineering firm (since gone under after nearly 100 years  :-\  ). The Ariel barrel was done by Draganfly. They charged only 35 quid for that whereas the engineering firm was 75.
I had thought that the Ariel barrel needed sleeving as it was badly scored but they checked it and rang back with the good (ie cheaper) news.
I sent the barrel by post to Draganfly. I forget the cost but Im sure it was well under 20 quid. The expensive bit was collecting it as I was in the area - I finished up blowing over 400 quid on some nice new panniers etc for my AJS 650  ::)

Hello, Chris.
Mine is a tight wire advance and the cable goes into the mag at the back side (of the bike, that is). Timing should be done with the ignition fully advanced. Haycraft (Pitman Book of the BSA) says maximum of 1/2 inch BTDC with premium fuel.
How's the project coming along?

I would go along with what has been said already, but folk shouldnt believe that these old bikes are inherently unreliable. Many are no longer in the first flush of mechanical youth and are likely to have gone through the hands of several owners to whom the bike was no more than a means of transport to be neglected and thrashed mercilessly until something broke - one or two still are it seems if we are to believe what we read ;)
The beauty of these bikes is that they are generally, being based firmly on 1920s or 30s technology, easy to repair, though sometimes at a cost. If it can be done by the owner, all the better, otherwise its a question of finding someone with the will and experience to sort out the problem properly, rather than bodge it (is the untrustworthy, profiteering individual who 'rebuilt' the engine in my Ariel for its previous owner reading this?  >:( )
More important than the ability to rebuild an engine is the willingness to treat it responsibly and take care to maintain it as the manufacturer intended. They will last and be totally reliable. My Matchless G80, which Ive owned for 25 years, now has over 64,000 on the clock and is still on its original bottom end and wire wound piston. I would happily ride it anywhere with never a thought of it not making the trip.
