Hi Derek.

I dunked the complete tank and it cleared the external rust as well. The chrome is in a far worse state than it looks--seriously cracked and pitted used a wire wheel to remove all the chrome flakes.(fortunately pitting doesn't go into tank itself).but no longer usable as a chrome tank.

It cleaned all the rust off outside leaving it with a sound surface for paint job. I've put a very thin layer of filler all over the outside and then worked it back so that at least its smooth. Next either an etch primer or a simple high build primer. I'm awaiting advice on that, but I doubt the value of etch in the circumstances.

So here's hoping. The other side of the tank has a lot of small dents.

Just got a very good complete brakes and all front hub and took it to have "new" wheel made.

If its OK with you folks I would like to post this restoration bit by bit--the straightforward things and the problem areas. I don't intend to post costs or any other nasties. But I am more than happy to answer cost related questions.

If it gets tooooooooo boring just say so and I'll at least know.

HI Bess :)

Yes that's a bril bit of kit :)

But its diameter limited. I have one and I think it will only do up to about 25mm. I only use it for copper etc. Must confess that I never thought of a stainless blade

Just thought this might be of interest. I find it a good way to get a square cut on pipe.
Just mark the pipe, put a jubilee clip around it and cut upto the clip. Before you do the clip up tight turn it around a couple of times to make sure its as square as possible. May not be 100% perfect but better than I can do "freehand".
I find that a fine 24tpi blade does the cleanest cut, without scraping away the side of the clip.

Thanks for that, it gives a bit more clarity to the Pay Pal situation. I've used it for years and must confess not really aware of its limitations.

I have a block that I put under the front wheel Then all I have to do is put the centre stand down and gently roll the bike backward. But not at the pub---I reckon my little remaining street cred would vanish.. BUT If it suits you then do it

Take care
