Hi Bess, it's a 1969 bike so no adjuster. I had a Good  look at it today. I managed to bend the new spring a little and that did the trick.

I've just rebuilt an A65L engine and gearbox. The engine is running great but I have a problem change up to 3rd and 4th gear from 2nd gear.  The return spring doesn't return the gear change lever to the correct position to allow the gear change plunger to engage into the window on the cam plate. If you move the lever down ever so slightly from the returned position then shift up, it does. I have fitted a new return spring but this didn't rectify the problem. Any tips on how to fix this?

Hi Bess, I fitted a new one as well and had the same problem. I eventually got the brake light to stay on by adjusting the brake and the lever arm that comes from the brake pedal to the switch. It took a few attempts to get it right.

I am confused. I am looking at a 1969 brochure showing the 1969 Lightning with no knee pads.  It says in the tech spec that the fuel tank capacity is 4 gallon.   My bike was exported to Hong Kong from the factory in 1969. Maybe the export models were different.  The engine and frame number suggests its an early 1969 model.

Hi, I did look at ebay but non of the 4 gallon tanks were correct for the 1969 model.  They had the wrong filler opening and they had the tapped holes on the sides for the rubber knee pad. the 69 model didn't have that.

The nut on the bike looks like a locking nut as it has a turned diameter then the Hex but no saw cuts like a lock nut. I've looked on line at various photographs and some of the nuts show the saw cuts and others don't. Very confusing. Also I presume the turned section goes closest to the pressure plate of the clutch. It does fine on the other way round as the turned section can fit inside the bore of the pressure washer.

Ive measured the thrust washer and its 0.053" thick. its flat but the back face of the clutch basket is appears to be concave as the rub marks are on the outer edges of the thrust washer.  Ive used Emery paper and a flat surface to thin down the thrust washer and I can now get the centre to turn within the basket. I am going to remove another 0.001" to make it turn a little easier. I don't want it to heat up and lock up when running the bike though.

There is a little bit of slack on the chain now.  All these parts look new as they were covered in a protective grease. The bike was in boxes when I bought it so the origin of the new parts are not known. it does have an alloy pressure plate with SRM on it so it must be one of there's, not sure if the whole clutch is one of there upgrades or not.  I will buy a new woodruff key today and I am away to do some space out  measurements. Does anyone know how thick the thrust washer should be?  is it normal to have to thin these down to get a proper fit?
