Again thanks good people for the replies  :) I am aware of the wet sumping issue as I have a Royal Enfield Bullet 500 which has a plug at the front of the engine to drain surplus wet sumping oil. But with that engine it has a dipstick to check the oil level when hot.

I have fitted an after market SRM sump drain kit to the A65 to do the same but were not sure about checking the actual oil levels.

On another note my engine number has the prefix of A65B - is that for a Thunderbolt as I was told and listed in log book as a Star?

Sorry for a very basic question but I emptied oil tank/sump and fitted new tank filter and put in fresh oil but could not add 5 pints as the handbook says. Is there a later oil tank with a smaller oil capacity that fits the A65 Star or am I doing something wrong? I have put in 4 pints up to neck of the tank - is there an approx checking level as no dipstick (other than me....... :-[)

Seasons Greetings to you all! After the ownership of several bikes since starting out on a Puch 50cc Sports in 1972 i am finally the proud owner of a 1962 BSA A65 Star. It has a few bodges and is not standard but I can live with that as long as I can keep it running. I will update it as time goes by.
I have had my first disaster with petrol stripping the paint off the side of the tank through a pinprick hole in the tank seam. Getting it sealed and resprayed cost me 390 so not a good start to ownership......
But I have a few friends in the club so by joining up shortly will hope to divert from any more problems and learn about enjoying the bike.
I hope to take my good lady as pillion but she asked for a pillion grab rail - was one mad for the 1962 A65 Star and if so is it still available?
