Twins / Re: LED h/light conversion

Thanks all for your input. Bike had 12v conversion already done when i purchased it recently. Was running a 6v E3L with a 12v CMES solid state rect/reg. and Lucas Rita ignition, which, apparently, consumes more power than most other Electronic ign. systems. The dynamo is currently with Armoto in Sheffield, who recommended having the armature rewound for 12v. Watch this space, but not for a few weeks!!!

Twins / Re: A65 extreme spark plug thread repair

Hi, have just had some work done on a S/Rocket head, one of the repairs was on a thread insert fitted incorrectly. Whilst there, the cyl. head guy (40 years experience) showed me the 3 types of insert, call them stage1,2 and 3. Stage 1 is a helicoil for cross/stripped plug threads. Stage 2 is a copper coated medium steel insert for use where there is insufficient metal to accept a helicoil. Stage 3 is a heavy duty copper coated steel insert for totally butchered holes. These have to be fitted by an skilled engineer. mine wasn't and came out attached to the plug whilst removing it for inspection. This was remedied by using a special loctite. They told me if the insert ever needed to be removed, it would have to be machined out, it's that good. Don't know your location, but the firm i used was South Cerney Engineering Ltd, Ashton Keynes near Cirencester. Worth checking out their website.

Have been advised to use an LED dip/main headlight bulb as S/Rocket has been upped to 12v, and coupled with electronic ignition has caused the E3L dynamo to fail. The LED bulb will use considerably less power than a conventional bulb and give the refurbed dynamo an easier life. Can anyone give advice on which LED to use. H4,H6,20w/40w. Does it require a resistor of some sort?. It all gets a bit confusing to the uninitiated (me!). All replies gratefully received. Greg.

Used barrels can usually be found on eBay. Not sure if you can get new ones anymore, but try Kidderminster Motorcycles, they're proper classic spares dealers. Also George Prew or Draganfly. They all advertise in the club mag.

Julian, many thanks for the info. I do remember coming across this electrical guru some time back as i also have a Matchbox, but due to the passage of time had forgotten about it. Well worth reading up about the Prof's simple and explanatory approach to dealing with electrical gremlins. Will post a thread later to inform those interested on the result.

Twins / S/Rocket dynamo not working

61 S/Rocket, stood for 11 years, dynamo showing no charge on ammeter. Have used multimeter across batt. terminals with engine running but voltage output not rising when revved. Seem to remember from 45+years ago that a wire from battery pos (if neg is earth) connected to the dynamo field wire and flashed to earth sometimes did the trick,(polarizing?) particularly if dynamo rebuilt or laid up for a long period. Can anyone advise on correct procedure. Converted to 12v with electronic rectifier/regulator. Thanks, Greg

Thanks Julian and other contributers, thought 30 ft/lbs would be about max for size of bolts, just wanted to be sure.

Twins / Re: 1961 A10 S/Rocket. Rear wheel binding
« on: 18 September, 2017, 15:43:39 »
Hi Julian, thanks for providing a cross section line drawing of the rear hub. The bearings were not removed and the washer at the spindle head is still in place. Have studied the drawing and identified all the parts, and as you state, there is no washer shown inboard of the brake plate. Have removed the wheel again and refitted but the problem remains. The "spare" washer is similar in size to the one at the spindle head and have no idea where it was dislodged from.

Removed rear wheel/drive sprocket completely to free sticking brake plate cam. Yes, i now know i could have left the sprocket ass. in situ. Freed up the cam spindle, deglazed the shoes and drum and refitted the wheel. After tightening the wheel spindle/nut the wheel is now binding and requires some effort to turn by hand. The shoes are not binding. Wheel turns freely when slackened off. Noticed a spindle-sized washer on workstand which i fitted next to the distance piece "cotton reel" on outside of the brake plate. Wondering if this should be fitted inboard of brake plate. Can anyone help please. Thanks Greg
