My chronometrics will stay at whatever speed they were reading if you stop driving them suddenly, for example if your speedo cable breaks or you remove a drive quickly when testing them. Simple way to check as someone said earlier is to use,a short length of cable in a drill and gently drive the speedo. You could probably reset it by doing this and slowing down the speed slowly, or by reversing the drive for a second or so.

You could also go the classic  note instead of a tax disc, mine say tax in post, with post crossed out and computer written underneath.

I haven't tried out Ensign tires myself, but I've heard different opinions floating around online. Some people really love them for that old-school vibe and say they perform pretty well, but then there are others who've had problems with how long they last or how well they grip the road.
Pretty much what I've heard and read , some like them some hate them heard of a few that had been removed after only a short mileage because of dislike for the way they handled, To be perfectly honest not too bothered  about longevity, dont think I'll be doing thousands of miles per year, still prevaricating probably end up tossing a coin.

That is good news but check that if you asked to sorn it when you filled in paperwork they actually did. A few weeks after getting my trident re-registered I got a letter saying it was not insured and I could be fined, when I checked online it had been taxed, not a massive problem as I simply sorn'd it but caused me a few moments of confusion, and if I hadn't checked could have led to a fine and points.

Not that hard to find, but they are expensive, and Ensigns are quite a bit cheaper,  a couple of dealers have them, supposedly in stock, but the couple of reviews and comments about the ensign tyres I have seen are that they squirm and have poor grip, was wondering if anyone had any experience of them, not necessarily in this size.  Thinking that I'll probably go for something I have experience of and end up with the Avons

Pre War / 20" tyre for b22
« on: 22 February, 2024, 10:27:20 »
Next job with the B22 is the front tyre, from one of the few photographs/ illustrations period I've seen of the B22 the original  front tyre appears to have a block type tread. Modern choices for tyres are either a avon sm, which is ribbed or an ensign, which is a block type and is more "original" in appearance. Can anyone tell me if the Ensign tyres are any good for use or are the couple of reviews,I've seen on the web accurrate and these are best avoided?

Hi
If you look at your quadrant you will see the firs tooth is short, as it should be, the purpose of this is for this to nudge the ratchet cog so that subsequent teeth align and do not jam by meeting peak to peak. The two gears should not be meshed when not using the kickstart.
This link explains it better than me

If you know someone in the motor trade they can  check if the frame number is registered on the dvla computer, think there are a couple of people on facebook who do this for a fee, free if not found otherwise as bob says you will need a dating  certificate from the dating officer, the website has instructions on how to apply for a logbook from the swansea jokeshop.

Twins / Re: A65 Ignition timing
« on: 30 January, 2024, 21:27:01 »
Gentlemen,
Thanks for the advice; for the first time I can now set the crankshaft to an accurate 34 degrees BTDC - assuming the pointer and holes are correct!
As per Yosemite's guidance, I will now try and install the advance/retard mechanism. From previous attempts it needs at least 3 very small hands and unfortunately I only have 2 large ones. I will persevere.....
If I can do it with my hands you can, size xxxl gloves and a bit of arthritis, Its fiddly but not impossible take it in steps, you,ll get it sorted

Early  a65ignition fully advanced is 0.357" before tdc or 3 7 °  according to bsa manual see photo, (if it loads properly) normally I set engine to correct angle place advance /retard in taper, fit contact breaker points with screws in centre of slot, then using a bolt screwed into the end of the advance/retard unit rotate it in the correct direction (with the unit fully advanced ) which is quite fiddly till the point start to open, either use a fag paper , a meter, or test light to do this. Then using the bolt in the advance unit push it to hold the unit on its taper and also hold it without allowing the unit to move then unscrew the bolt. Once this is done screw in the centre  bolt. Finally check that everything is right, if you are like me then you will find something is off slightly so reset crank position and this time adjust by turning the points backplate to correct. Forgot to say before setting timing assemble it all  dont bother  about timing at this stage and set points gaps. Then take it apart and sstart to set timing

Fitted an easy cap thing to a mag on my douglas 350, after a  few miles wouldn't start, points gap was gone, adjusted gap to find after a few miles the bike started running rough, this time points gap was wider than it should have been, to cut a long story short found that the static point  contact,  the one that clamps the easy cap down,  was for want of a better description moving which affected timing and spark. Ended up having to completely strip armature and put in a proper condensor. Dont know if it was me not tightening the screw down enough but after rebuilding the mag using the original parts there was no problem with the bike, at least there wasn't till the big end roller cage  collapsed.

There is a book by graham blighe, called magnetic speedo repair, that I found invaluable when I had to repair one , book is available through his site at https://improvingclassicmotorcycles.com/index.htm
Also available, at least they were 2 years back at several of the big shows were replacement bodies, beztels and glasses for magnetic speedos that had screw on bezels rather than having to spend ages tring to crimp a bezel neatly only to have the glass crack as you think you've got it done. I asked the guy at the time if they had a website but he said he only did shows

Got phone number from andy tiernans website not tried it yet  been too knackered, had covid  for a couple of weeks,  thoughtI would be recovered now,  but just feeling sleepy all the time. Takes all my energy to get out of bed, glad I had all my injections cause cant dare think how bad would have been without.
