Title: 1947 B31. Which rear light?
Post by: BUCCIALI on 22 April, 2017, 13:14:20
Hello everyone.
I'm new to BSA's and have recently bought an early B31, mainly because my late father had one.
It's a 1947 model with the speedo in the fuel tank.
The rear light currently fitted is a horrible rubber bodied affair which I don't think is original.
I've looked at many photo's on Google but can't come up with a definitive answer.
Can someone please advise me what would have been fitted originally?
Maybe something like this;

Thanks for your help.
Paul.

Lucas master list 1936-58 shows the original fitment was the MT211 between 1945 and 1950 but dont go out in the dark with it because nobody will see you.

Many of these tiny rear lights would have been changed by owners over the years for a more visible unit.

This is the MT211 as fitted to the A7. You can see the cable run. From the 1947 brochure.

I changed my original rear light for a Lucas 525 unit on my Star Twin on the insistence of my wife. The original really was pretty dismal and as I use my bike in all conditions, night and day, rain or shine, being seen is really quite important. So you have to decide if your bike is for general use (and that's what it's really rather good for) or just dry and sunny days and choose the appropriate light.
It's shocking just how invisible a classic bike is when it's dull and raining. And don't forget there are plenty of older car drivers on the road who just don't see as well as they used to. Scary.

Thanks very much, that's great.
I agree with your comments about the light output and the modern road environment!
The bike will be used on sunny Sundays mainly so I think I'll keep to the original type.
