Title: Painting Barrels black
Post by: A10 JWO on 13 January, 2018, 16:29:26
Been a long time since I painted a set of BSA barrels. Is there anything new out there with a nice sheen that wont come off too soon. I have had the barrels in the parts washer bath for a few days in anticipation.

Powder coating.
In the old days stove enamelling.

 :)

My man tells me that powder coating will decrease the cooling effect of the fins. So I've stopped doing it and I use Very High Temperature aerosols. All the colours you could want.

Your thoughts please.

Hammerite smooth seems pretty resilient. I find other high temperature aerosols don't last the first rain shower. Brushing gives a decent coat though a few coats of the spray can is pretty good.

VHT enamel is very good and you can bake it on in an oven to make it more durable.

Of course a hot engine will bake it on for you - keeps the kitchen fume free.

Or you could just get it stove enamelled.

Hi Lads. I like the sound of the high temperature aerosols and plonk them in the oven when the wife is at work. What setting in an electric oven ? I have used VHT a few times on totally different types of projects. Thanks for replies.

Bake temperature is 120 deg C for 30 minutes. More reliable to do it in the oven otherwise you could damage the paint more easily when re-assembling the engine.

Having barrels sand blasted Saturday as rust pitting is quite deep. Then painting with VHT within a few hours. With update with results.

I've only ever had barrels vapour blasted before now - is it safe to have them shot blasted especially in terms of protecting the bores?

Got the barrels back today, still masked up with heavy duty duct tape so the gun never hit the bores or gasket edges. I have sprayed it gloss black with Halfords home make VHT and it looks nice. I will check it over tomorrow and bake it in the oven. I will put the whole lot in a bath when it's finished and finally put an air line through the oilways. This guy did my frame for me and other bits.

I'm late for this one, but I prefer soda blasting as there's no chance of blasting grit getting anywhere & the rust & crud can be washed away with the remaining soda. I also prefer to treat with Kurust before painting. I have found BBQ paint in aerosols to be very good.

I had an engine rebuilt professionally last year (not a BSA) and their approach was to vapour blast and powder coat the barrel before reboring it to prevent damage to the bore. That approach must have been based on long experience in doing this type of work.
