Title: BSA A10 fuel taps

Hi all,

Got my lovely 1960 A10 out for a run earlier.

I noticed the fuel tap on the main feed side is dripping and has got worse since i last put it away. Is there a tap rebuild solution for this issue?
Or can i get new fuel taps?

What do other users usually do?

I'd like to keep the original taps if possible.

Any help would be appreciated.

I went completely wild and bought a new pair from C & D Autos. Can't be bothered with fiddling around with leaky corks. Plus I don't really want petrol dripping on hot exhausts and HT leads. The only downside is rivet counters fainting in horror.

I think B&Q quarter turn gas taps are the answer, I use them on most of my bikes, screw straight in and do not leak.

I have found that replacement cork plunger do start to leak again after a comparatively short time. I am not convinced that cork and ethanol fuel are compatible.

Changed to lever taps on my A10 no more leaks.

Hitchcock motorcycles do a nice range of fuel taps, not just Enfield. Regards.

Hi Adam,
              The best option is no doubt use a modern fuel tap, I have done so and by the posts many others have.

As Julian mentioned ethanol is a powerful solvent that, without a suitable additive, attacks many fuel system components including zinc and galvanised materials, brass, copper, aluminium, seals and hoses, cork, polyurethane and epoxy resins. In other words, almost everything used in a vehicle made more than about 20 years ago.

If you are trying to keep the original taps, replacement cork plungers. Or keep the external original taps modernising the seal material, you can have the plungers modified with a row of Viton 'O rings' in place of the cork.

Thanks for the replies and advice all.

I think i will just change the tap inserts for now with new cork plungers. That hitchcock site looks good.

They arent the best solution but it'll do for now.
(Im also a bit of a stickler for total originality)

Hi Adam,
As you are going to continue with the cork, I read a tip recently re this. Boil them in water before fitting and fit them as soon as they are cooled down. Apparently, it fills up any air pockets and they seal OK when done this way.

No not now but I used to before it went to gas safe!!!!
