Title: Fuel tank
Post by: DAVID.FORSYTH@VIRGIN.NET on 07 August, 2017, 11:31:27
Hi, does anyone have a fuel tank for sale that is correct for a 1969 A65 Lightning, or know where to get one?

Hi,
Try Ebay, lots of good tanks coming from India at the moment. Pick one that has the "make an offer" option and go in low, they will barter. Remember there will be customs and VAT.

I bought a 2 gallon bare metal this year for a A65 which is fine.

Best wishes...

Hi, I did look at ebay but non of the 4 gallon tanks were correct for the 1969 model.  They had the wrong filler opening and they had the tapped holes on the sides for the rubber knee pad. the 69 model didn't have that.

Contemporary photos of the 1969 Lightning show rubber knee grips on the 4 gallon tank - the 1969 parts book shows the same, brackets attached to tank with screws for the knee grips to mount on.

There was also a mid season change of filler cap, from a hinged one secured to the tank with a rivet to a round bayonet fitting type. This is detailed in a parts service bulletin issued in February 1969 - G56.

I am confused. I am looking at a 1969 brochure showing the 1969 Lightning with no knee pads.  It says in the tech spec that the fuel tank capacity is 4 gallon.   My bike was exported to Hong Kong from the factory in 1969. Maybe the export models were different.  The engine and frame number suggests its an early 1969 model.

Yes it can get confusing. I think the UK brochure is showing the US tank.

The first photo is from the 1969 US brochure showing a tank capacity of 3 1/4 US galloms which is 2.7 UK gallons.

Others from 1969 parts catalogue.

Hi,
You're in luck there's an export tank on eBay now, located in the UK:

Thanks Bess, would my bike have left the factory with a 2.7 gallon tank. How would I find this out?

Hi,
I think but not sure but applying for a dating certificate via the club will unearth the information.

Best wishes...
